Falcons were worth a handsome sum and were symbolic of a lord’s power and skill. There were strict laws in place to protect these valuable birds. If a person destroyed the bird’s eggs, his punishment was one year in prison. Falcons were used as peace offerings to end wars, and they were brought along when a lord and his men invaded a foreign land. Some people even brought their falcons along to church, which often resulted in an unpleasant mess.

—St. Bernardino of Siena, 1427

However, at times, it was not uncommon for noblewomen to hold fiefs and oversee the daily management of these lands.
